K2 dropdown menu

Hello,
Im using the JA directory template and in the Search now module on the homepage there are 2 dropdown menu's called: Select category' and 'Select location'.
The 'select category' dropdown has another style than the 'select location'. The select category isnt working very well responsive with long words, because there is to much spacing before the stripes (-).
My question, how can i change it, so that it looks the same as 'select location' ?

Look for this snippet of code:

if ($type) {
    $pre = '|_&nbsp;';
    $spacer = '&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;';
} else {
    $pre = '- ';
    $spacer = '&nbsp;&nbsp;';
}

change it to:

if ($type) {
    $pre = '-&nbsp;';
    $spacer = '&nbsp;&nbsp;';
} else {
    $pre = '- ';
    $spacer = '&nbsp;&nbsp;';
}
