Ok, I am totally new to Joomla and have just taken over this website. I accidentially did something so that I cannot see the module positions in the template in the backend anymore and I really really need to fix this.
I am an experienced WordPress person, but I have searched and searched and can't figure what I changed that made this disappear. Can someone help.

The layout does not show if the Max execution time and memory limits are low on server or you did wrogng changes in the layout files.
You can rename the /tpls folder and add tpls folder from fresh download packge. it will replace all layout customization and restore new files.

if there is any custom override in the /local folder kindly rename it as well.

Thank you, I have no idea, if I did anything else other than a new color scheme that I created in the local file so I hope this works.

So it didn't work. Now what do I try. I have to fix this website and I can't even begin to figure out the front-end editor, if it still works.

Kindly edit fields in first post and submit site super user login details.
Do not revert the changes i suggested to fix the issue including restore the file and rename folder.
Also make sure the memory limits are 512M and max execution time is 300 in your server PHP values.

I will debug this issue.

By the way when I go to log in, something adds a period to the end of the url

So instead of http://suryaelectronicsinc.com/administrator

It comes up as: http://suryaelectronicsinc.com./administrator

The details should not be send by mail, but placed in black field upon first post editing.

Kindly increase max_execution_time 300 and memory limits to 256M as suggested in first post.
you can ask the hosting provider to check the domain redirections issues and change these limits.

The issue of layout is also seems form the server side : http://prntscr.com/mf1ghm
Kindly ask the provider to fix it so it will allow the layout to load. Here is tutorial for this fix.

There is no php.ini file. So your telling me this isn't fixed.

if its not exist kindly ask hosting team to increase the values for you. something host does not support the customization and it will be done by server team only.
