less to css loses some customization

I finished the site and took it out of development mode. I then clicked less to css and lost some of the changes that were made such as the stroke on the .ja-masthead-title, the font size and weight on the main navigation links and the opacity of the mask on the slider and masthead.

Why does this happen and why shouldn't I leave the site using the less files vs. the css files?

Less to css works fine if done correctly, we cannot answer to your question if we don't know how and in which less file you applied customizations.

Make one change at once and compile less to css each time you make a change, do not compile it after you modified a lot of styles, otherwise you cannot understand correctly where you are adding wrong code.

My suggestion in this case is to apply changes directly to custom.css file

I had not known about compiling after each change.

What do you mean by "wrong code?"

If the change in the less file alters the site the way I intend to change it, how can it be wrong?

With the number of changes I have made, I will have to resort to using the less files and ignore the less to css process.

If there is wrong syntax in less files in custom changes, there is chances that the compile is not work.
You can let me know the changes you applied in less file and the path of file.
It will help to under the changes that is not applied in css mode.

I cannot give you a list of changes. I didn't see any errors when the changes were made but I could be wrong. All the changes I made altered the elements as I wanted them changed.

The only way is for me to find out is to recreate the site and start again making changes. I'm not in a position to do that. It works using the less files at the moment.

You can overwrite the original .less files taking them from downloaded files and start to customize again them, to be sure to identify the error you should compile less files each time you add a single custom code.
