'Failed publishing ...' Unable to Publish Pages in Menu

I tried to add two pages (they are 'single articles') to a menu list. The menu currently links to a page showing a 404 error. The template is the JA Insight site.

Unfortunately a message came up like this one

'Failed publishing ... menu item as at least one of its parents is unpublished or one of its children is checked out'

When I try to publish the individual page with the publish setting, it temporarily saves then later goes back to an unpublished state.

Can you please point me in the direction of how to solve this issue?

As the message indicates that the menu item which you're trying to publish is a child item of the another unpublished one. You need to publish its parent item first or move this child item to root menu.

Could you please be more specific? Perhaps with step by step instructions as to how to 'publish the parent item first' or 'move this child item to the root menu'? All that I have from you is a repeat of the actual message that came up.

I have already checked the menu items that do work and replicated all settings on the wto new pages. I have also 'rebuilt' and 'published' the menu again.

I have been working on this for over a day now....it appears that this is a common problem with Joomla and might well need some kind of modification using SQL in the database. I am not an expert in this and do not know where to start.

Essentially, 1) The 'parent' is fully published and 'rebuilt' and 2) the menu items (articles) have no 'children' at all. Also, 3) They are published 'as articles' but cannot be added to the menu as items.

I would welcome any help and feedback as I have spent hours trying to get this to work.
