My private messages are all blank there is no text in them. I have tried turning off the optimization plugin but it did not help. I thought it may be an issue with the colour of the text but there is not text there if I try to highlight it.

Ninja All message that are deleted will not be recovered. Hi The limit you set now will not work for older message that are removed. It will only work for current new chat messages.
Also if you updated the JomSocial from very older version to new version, Make sure you have added the Cron Job in cpanel to auto run the cron.
The settings are correct. the messages are blank.

Ninja Would you mind telling me how to do that? I did not update from a very old version but I did move my site to a new hosting provider.
embroideryallsorts Here is doc https://documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/Setting_Up_Cron_Job You can set up the cron. If previous message not in DB it would not come back as they auto deleted the setting will work on new messages.
