Upgrade 'from very old version' 2.2.2 crashes at step 10: Zend Framework

I just bought JomSocial Pro and tried the first tier upgrade step from installed version 2.2.2 (not mentioned in the upgrade path) to next version available (2.2.5). The update runs till step 10 and then crashes with the following PHP error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function getElementByPath() on null in /var/www/vhosts/hippie-forum.de/httpdocs/hippie/administrator/components/com_community/installer.helper.php on line 1308

Joomla version is still 1.5.25
PHP version is 5.6.40 (CGI handler)

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

You need to upgrade your Joomla version first https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_1.5_to_3.x_Step_by_Step_Migration
if your site has 3rd party extensions that not compatible with the Joomla upgrades , kindly disable them and try this on a test site first.

If there is any error, you can upgrade to next version of JomSocial, step by step .

thanks for reply, but I don't think, that your solution will work, because Jomsocial 2.2.5 will not work on Joomla 3.5, will it?

I followed the steps in this doc:

There is mentioned:
Uninstall version 2.2.5 and install version 2.4.3. Go download version 2.6.3.
Uninstall version 2.4.3 and install version 2.6.3.
This is the moment where we must stop because Joomla 1.5 migration to Joomla 2.5 is required in order to install next versions of JomSocial.

My problem is, that I'm unable to do the first step, because the ZEND framework crashes during installation. Nevertheless, I'll give it a try tonight and give feedback!

It will not work for Joomla 3.5 as its very old version. you need to update Jomsocial with respect to the Joomla.
first set the system requirement as recommended here https://documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/JomSocial_4.4_System_Requirements

Just made a fresh & clean joomla 3.9.18 installation on a test domain and tried to install JomSocial 2.2.5, but as I already expected, JomSocial 2.2.5 is not compatible with Joomla 3.x

Following the instructions above, I have to do a tier update from 2.2.2 to 2.2.5 to 2.4.3 to 2.6.3 - but I got that above mentioned error already when I try to install JomSocial 2.2.5

Any other suggestions?

That's what I said before... pl. don't be angry at me, I'm an IT professional and (normally) know what I'm doing. I gave the error a closer look tonight and found out, that the crashing script installer.helper.php connects to www.jomsocial.com and tries to open a file named "jomsocial.xml". From the content of this file the script tries to read th version of the Zend Framework, that old JomSocial installations based on.

The problem is: This file doesn't seem to exist any more (at least, it's not accessable). So the upgrade described in the above mentioned document ( https://documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/Updating_From_Very_Old_JomSocial_Versions ) CANNOT work!

Without having access to that file, the installation routine will not be able to complete. Do you probably have a 2nd level support, who knows what I'm talking about and is able to give me access to that file or tell me a workaround (probably there is no update of the Zend framework needed, but I have to know this).

Have you updated the JomSocial with respect to Joomla compatibility level i shared in last post?
With each Jomsocial install you need to install next update, as the older install is used to update the Database tables, Dev would not be able to fix the bugs for older version 2.x as there code is freezed.
Thats why i suggested you to do update first.

Kindly make it first and if you have any error, edit fields in first post and submit the site super user login for staff.

Make sure you are updating JomSocial to 4.x too when you move to Joomla 3.x

the problem is: I cannot update from JomSocial 2.2.2 (which the site is running right now) to the next version (2.2.5) in the history list and the reason is, that the file at jomsocial.com/jomsocial.xml doesn't exist any more on your server. That's a fact.

If you don't believe me, pl. tell me, what excactly I should do now.

the file IS required for update to JomSocial 2.2.5 - the php file 'installer.help.php' of JomSocial 2.2.5 installation routine requests it in the function 'getZendFrameworkCurrentData()' (starting in line 1260 of the file) - very obvious to everyone who has a little knowledge about programming in PHP.

I told you already in the first post. The error message is:

Fatal error: Call to a member function getElementByPath() on null in /var/www/vhosts/hippie-forum.de/httpdocs/hippie/administrator/components/com_community/installer.helper.php on line 1308

The script crashes on line 1308 in the function getZendFrameworkCurrentData(), because it has no access to the file in variable $xml (line 1268-1269 of the script):

	$site		= 'www.jomsocial.com';
	$xml		= 'jomsocial.xml';

Ok?

I set up a copy of the installation with a cloned database and gave you the URL, Joomla super administrator account and ftp account, so you can test whatever you like without crashing the live site.

Kindly update /Migrate the Joomla to 3.x after that i will install the version 3.
You can ignore the erorr of installation and do the install of next version of JomSocial one by one, with respect to Joomla compatibility .

I managed to upgrade Joomla to V3.5.1 and JomSocial to V4.2.6 in the meantime. There are some "not-so-nice" things, but I can live with:
• Some avatars look "egged" - in a PDF document I found the notice, that there will be a tool to fix this, but I couldn't find it anywhere.
• The activity stream has some entries like {actor}, {target} or <a href="{group_url}">group name</a> and so on

I can live with the above mentioned things, if there's no way to convert it correctly, but I experienced a problem, when I try to update to the next JS version 4.3.5:

After updating to v4.3.5 all personal messages are gone. Is this a known issue and how to fix it?

The message are converted into the chat tables in 4.5.x
The older message option is no longer exist, all new JomSocial use Live chat and messages will be deleted auto depend on the backend settings.
The message will be back on each cron job. but there interface will be as live chat you can check here : http://js-main.demo.jomsocial.com/
Since there are many new changes the language files also updated in each new versions you can go to latest version and it will support the all new EN language constant.

two things regarding the messages:

I upgraded to JS 4.4.5 and ran the CRON job. After that, I see the 32 oldest messages, when I hit the envelope symbol in JS toolbar, but not any newer ones. Where is the rest?

Where do I find these settings?

OK, obviously the CRON job does only some conersions per run, the more often I run it, the more messages appear... right?

Next thing: Can you probably tell me, which CSS elements of the Joomla template the JS toolbar uses?

Background: At hover, the highlighted element seems to be bigger than the others, so the whole bar is "springing", when you move the mouse pointer over an element. This doesn't happen, when I use a standard Joomla template, so it looks like the JS toolbar uses elements of the Joomla template CSS.

In each cronjob run there is set to task completed. You can set the cron job setup on server with a minimum time to autorun.
To check the message setting go to Jomsocial > Configurations > message chat.
