I need to disable the form in contact us..... getting smashed with huge spam. i put a recapta on it but hasnt slowed it down at all.
Ive turned off the form but its still showing.

You need to turn the form from contact menu item. Here some extensions on JED you can use for spam protection : https://extensions.joomla.org/tags/spam-protection/

This appears a bug in the override for contact page, I raised the issue to development team on this for fix.
By the way if you are no longer using contact form you can replace it with a normal single article and put your contact information as main part of the Joomla contact form is contact form, once it hidden you will get only name and image. on right side .
