Yea so normally there a button that says "register" on the front end of jomsocial so you can register an account. You can also configure Jomsocial so that a user has to "apply for an invitation". I was hoping that you could tell me where I can find the line of code to change the verbage of the second button (apply for an invitation" )

All the Language text is defined in the site root folder /language/en-GB/com_community.ini file
You can also override the text via Joomla language override option

so when you change this from register account to apply for application, jom auto rewrites the code?

If your question is about the Invitation button yes, when the registration is disabled and you enable invite only option in Jomsocial it will change the button on frontend.

Once the button is changed, then will I need to proceed to the "language/en-GB/com_community.in" to change the verbiage?

Both are different options completely and auto change the values. About the language part its up to you like you wan to change the button text to different or not.
