I've installed the quickstart with demo content and it shows some empty spaces in the blog layout on the homepage.
Also, the intro images do not fill the space as good as on the demo, even when using the same images as on the demo. They seem to get resized differently.
Do you have a solution for this or can take a look at it?

Kindly check it now. The content on your sit has been changed.
The above issue is fixed now.
I suggest you to use same size of images for all articles and same amount of intro text for a more better view.

Thanks for looking at it. The blog spacing issue is solved, but the image size of the intro images is still different. I used exactly the same image in these 2 blog items, but they resize differently and new uploads do not fill the space correctly. (see picture below)
Could you have another look please?

it seems you have custom plugin for intro images as its not from Joomla http://prntscr.com/17yadlh
Also Image float should be same for all articles intro http://prntscr.com/17yako0
Intro Image size of articles are not exact same too.
I've unpublished the image plugin and set floating to none.
The images show correct now, but there is white pace now on the left column.

Is it possible to have normal pagination instead of a "load more" button?

Kindly check the site as normal public view.
As super user can see unpublished article as well.
About the space it depends on the intro text of articles. if there different height of articles there will different spaces.
For Normal pagination it need to change the layout file of Featured blog.
If you need default Joomla view it will be like this : http://prntscr.com/17z4nyc
Masthead on left. the lead article moved to the top and rest of articles below it.
