I downloaded the files, but there appear to be significant changes in those files, and I'm thinking that fix may not be appropriate for version 4.7.9. Is there a current version of that fix?

This issue was fixed in 4.5.2 already. Please Go to the Configurations > Message/chat setting and disable the unread message notification.
That looks to have worked - thanks!
For others having the same issue, the setting seems to be "Duration of unread notification", and then there is a "disabled" option in the dropdown.
