How do we edit from the front end and have the article automatically publish. At the moment each front end edit leads to us having to log in backend and reset to publish

Joomla does not allow the option to publish the articles auto via frontend as part of moderation and any user can submit anything.

You can use 3rd party article manager extension from Joomla extension directory that gives option after submission of article to edit and publish them. Here you can see an example
