I had inquired about this a while ago but wanted to re-visit the topic to see if anything has changed. Is there a way to prevent public groups from showing in the main feed? I've had to force all groups to be private because people didn't want to scroll through posts in groups they cared nothing about. I am currently on 4.7.6 and am debating upgrading because I've done so much custom work, but if there's a way to tackle this issue then it is probably worth the effort to upgrade.

Also, I have renewed my membership (a very expensive way to ask this question by the way) and still cannot see replies in the forum because it says I have to "join". Can I get this fixed please?

Has o checked your request it's a custom change dev team did only for you as exceptional case and compatible to 4.7.6.
You kay compare the file with new version and try make the change. Because public groups are mainly work like this even pages, events so work as social community.
I saw our previous dev shared a file here https://www.joomlart.com/forums/d/26152-feature-request-for-better-group-management/3

This wouldn't work as core as it make change for all users and not logicallogical

There is one more way you can do. Unpublished the user points will not allow to show that user point item in wall streams.

Ninja Could you elaborate on your statement "There is one more way you can do. Unpublished the user points will not allow to show that user point item in wall streams."?

        Hi
Open JomSocial configurations > User points
If you disable a user point for example : Group Updated
Assign number of points when user updates the group information and select wether to create activity stream item for this action.

If this disable this action post will not show in Wall stream.
