Hello
I keep receiving the “502 backend / gateway” error message when I come to my website.
How can I resolve this problem?

GoDaddy told me that it’s a problem with my website. That the database is consuming an exorbitant amount of resources and overloading my ram and two CPUs.

Thanks,
Louis

I updated to the latest version of JomSocial.
I'm trying to upload the error log for March but your system wont allow me. I tried using -- Word, text file, and pdf.
I put the text file into a zipped folder and was able to upload it.

My developer and GoDaddy support told me that the jomsocial configuration levels that you suggested for the PHP settings are extraordinary high for a standard website. These settings aren't standard. https://prnt.sc/rMs5WSgfljBO

Why do the setting have to be this high?
Here's screenshots of my disk usage:

    https://prnt.sc/oFJ-C_UrFDph
    https://prnt.sc/O-J0Pe88692J

For my small website, I'm currently using the Deluxe package . The settings that you want me to configure my PHP setting to, requires that I be on a hosting plan 3 levels higher than what I'm on now, which will be most expensive. This doesn't make sense.

I'm currently on PHP version 7.4.
It will allow me to upgrade to version 8.0 and 8.1.

    Regards,
    Louis

GoDaddy Support sent me this information:

    Thank you for your patience,

Regarding the 502 errors, these mean that the firewall has attempted to make a request to the hosting server but we have not received a response back. This could happen due to a variety of reasons:

    • A security plugin is blocking access from our firewall IP addresses
    • The hosting account may have hit its resource limits temporarily
    • The hosting server may have been under load and couldn't respond in time
    • Your web application may have triggered a Mod Security firewall rule on the hosting server
    • The hosting server's firewall is blocking our firewall IP addresses
    • Server exceeded a maximum number of simultaneous application or web server processes

    USER ---->> FIREWALL ---->> SERVER 502<<-- <<-- <--no-response/block--

We are unable to see why the timeout happens, we can only see when it does. Normally, it can be due to the server being overloaded, it being misconfigured OR possibly blocking our IPs. There is more information on this issue here:

    https://kb.sucuri.net/firewall/Troubleshooting/fixing-backend-timeout

Your web host will be able to correlate these timeouts with their own internal logs to determine why their hosting server is not responding to requests from the Firewall. The time zone of these errors is EST.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

    With Regards,
    Zane

      Hi
      Do you still having error?
I could not able to replicate this on your site It opening the page

For the logs i see you also have the wordpress website installed and some test site. bout JomSocial there is no firewall inside JomSocial,
You can disable the mod security on your server and Sucuri first as this is firewall that block the IP.
I spent alot time on the backend to check if anything from JomSocial setting loading the resources and set all to optimized.
My access is blocked by firewall

If the issue back your side, allow me to download the website akeeba backup so i can install it on local and on a test server to check if it show same problem.

      Thanks for your help.
I haven't experienced the 502 error since last week.

I disabled the firewall to allow you to work.

      Can you answer my questions.
      1) I asked, ...My developer and GoDaddy support told me that the jomsocial configuration levels that you suggested for the PHP settings are extraordinarily high.
Why does the setting have to be this high?

      2) Do I upgrade my PHP version?
I'm currently on PHP version 7.4. It will allow me to upgrade to version 8.0 and 8.1.

I didn’t know I had WordPress and test site installed. I’m going to remove these.
Can you show me where you see this, the path, section, and location?
Are these items causing any problems?

      I don’t have a firewall installed because I’m using GoDaddy’s firewall.

I don’t understand what you mean, below. Can you better explain!
…“ I spent alot time on the backend to check if anything from JomSocial setting loading the resources and set all to optimized.”
Did you make some configuration changes?

      Thanks,
      Louis

wilshire5000 I haven't experienced the 502 error since last week.

I disabled the firewall to allow you to work

        Hi
There is no work required as it is working fine my side and your side as well.

        1. The Jomsocial setting required in case site is bigger, your current site okay with current configuration. More resource used when u have more users and upload local videos as that use server resources.
        2. JomSocial support PHO 8.0 not PHO 8.1 at the moment, make sure all other extension on your site also ready for PHP 8
        3. On Jomsocial setting i set the notification 60 seconds refreshed before its 1seconds and your server resource will be used more if you set a less time.

        Sir,
I didn’t know I had WordPress and test site installed.
Where did you find this information?
Please give details, location and section where you found this information.

        Thanks,
        Louis

Also, I don't have any users. Maybe 10, and they're never logged in.
This should not be causing my database and CPU to overload.
When I login into Cpanel, it spikes.

        FYI:
I turned the firewall back on. If you need to do further work, give me your IP adress so that I can white list it.

        Hi
No site access required as I have not found issue is JomSocial. The CPU usage details you can get from hosting provider only as backend JomSocial does not give this info. About WordPress site please check the logs u sent in previous post it showing there only.

        Hello,
I think GoDaddy found the problem.
It has to do with the DJ-WEbP extension, https://prnt.sc/LDJ_MiM7jDNd

        GODADDY MESSAGE
......While I did experience the latency while logging in and can see that a single login spiked your CPU to 50%, I'll say that is abnormal.

Also, while the development work is not within our scope of support on the security team, I was able to pull some data from your hosting servers' error logs recorded during my login.

Here is a pastebin link for you with the information:
        https://pastebin.sucuri.net/cqzps5rjiwnau4

I would share this info with Joomla support. What we see in the error logs is a recurring issue with a plugin "djimgtowebp"

Also, per my research it seems there is a common issue with this plugin causing websites to crash (spike resources until it crashes):

        https://support.dj-extensions.com/portal/en/community/topic/php-notice-causes-site-to-crash

This article matches the PHP version you are currently running. 7.4.

What I suggest is to work through the scripting issue with Joomla support or a developer and stay on then re- assess your hosting needs.
