The menu module in sidebar is default menu module in Joomla, if you want to have better navigation, I recommend you to find a suitable menu module in JED: https://extensions.joomla.org/

With overlay, you have to customize style: css/js to achieve that, and it's why I recommend to use a 3rd party extension which supports the menu module with style you wish.
