Reduce height of Hero Style-1 image

Hi all,
I've tried changing the height of the Hero image on the Home page by chaning the image dimensions, but the image always seems to appear the same height (zoomed in to a set height).
Can you suggest a way to reduce the height please, as I need to see the 'News articles' that are below the image, without havintg to scroll down the page to see it. See below.

     height: 600px;
}

It only seems to work on wide-screen?
Can't really see any effect on my 14" laptop, on tablet or phone.
Any ideas why?
