Which template to use for migration from joomla 2.5 to joomla 4

Hi,

I am currently using an old template from joomla bamboo (JB Koan), using joomla 2.5 and PHP 5.5 at present. I'm looking to update to joomla 4, and will apparently need to do various mini migrations in order to do that. First go to J 3.5.1, then to J 3.6.5, then to J 3.10.x. and then finally to 4.x (according to the joomla forum documents)

I guess I need to start the first migration (upgrading to J 3.5.1) by using a template that is compatible with J 2.5 as well as J 3.5.1. I am wondering which template I can use from joomlart? I'm thinking of using JA Blockk or JA Phio for my final website. I'm seeing that both of these templates have got different versions that can be downloaded. Can somebody tell me which version shall I download and use, that will be compatible with joomla 2.5?

JA Blockk and JA Phio templates support Joomla 3 and Joomla 4 only, there is no version for Joomla 2.5

I recommend you to switch default Joomla template (in Joomla 2.5 website) to use standard template of Joomla like Beez and migrate your site to Joomla 3 first. Then you install latest version of JA Blockk / JA Phio + their complimentary extensions into your site, our templates work with both Joomla 3 and Joomla 4 versions.

Ok, but when I'm switching to Beez5 template, my entire website disappears. I am considering using the JB Koan template for the migration to joomla 3 in order to not loose any data. Then I can switch template while already on joomla 3 and make all the necessary changes to my webiste without risking loosing data.

Is there a JB Koan template compatible with joomla 2.5 and joomla 3? If yes, which version would you recommend I use? I am currently using the v 2..2.0 as the default template for my site. I also have the v 1.2.0 installed in the backend (which seems to be compatible up to joomla 3.0), but when I'm switching to this template on joomla 2.5, my website disappears. Anyway to fix that? Or which other more up to date version of JB Koan should I use to keep my website and data while I do the upgrade to J3 (I think I'll most probably first upgrade to joomla 3.5.1.

If you're using Joomla 2.5, you should not care about template, just use the default Joomla template. Then migrate all data of your site including: Joomla or 3rd party extensions (if you have) to Joomla 3 first.

And you can install JA Blockk or JA Phio then.

Thank you! I thought I had to remove all extensions, plugins, templates, modules, etc… that are not compatible with joomla 3 before I do the upgrade.

I guess that I need to remove the zen tools and zengrid framework modules (or upgrade to the latest version) before I run the J3 upgrade or can I leave them while I run the upgrade? If I remove them, will that mean that all modules created with zen tools (1.10.2) or zengrid framework (2.3.1) will be automatically removed? I guess that with regards to the zen tools it will remove the modules but keep the articles that were included to create image galleries for example?

Also, I’m not sure about the following plugins (in my extension manager): Editor Code mirror, Editor – none, Editor – Tiny MCE. I guess I need to leave them? Will the upgrade to joomla 3 automatically update them? Or do I need to remove them or do something else before the upgrade?

Also, I have a lot of plugins in my plugin manager. These were downloaded with the JB Koan package with all the features of the demo site I guess. Do I need to remove these plugins or will the upgrade automatically upgrade them too? Are some of these from Joomla and so necessary to the normal functioning of the site?

I have already updated K2 to the latest version.

Backup your site
When we acquired JoomlaBamboo, products support Joomla 3 already so I'm not sure if they can support Joomla 2.5 as by that time, Joomla 2.5 is already stopped being supported by Joomla. So if you tend to switch to JoomlArt template like JA Blockk / Phio, you can remove them before updating.
With 3rd party extension like the editor (Code Mirror, TinyMCE...) you can simply disable default editor in Global configuration to None for now before updating.
For extensions from Joomla default, they will be removed / updated when you update to Joomla 3.

Updating Joomla will take time so I recommend you to follow this guide to start: https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_2.5_to_3.10_Step_by_Step_Migration or hire a developer to get it done for you.
