We have located the issue. The OG tags were appearing twice in all our articles: once in the article itself and a second time from a module on our home page.

The issue is that OG tags are generated twice on the home page (one each from two modules) and that facebook chooses the wrong OG tag to attribute to an article.

We solved our issue – after two days of waiting being told we had apparaently fixed the issue when we hadn't –by removing one of the modules generating OG tags. If you have a better solution we'd like to hear it.

If you are using the other modules and it generating OG tags, you can disable this option.

Thanks Dominic, we've disabled that and see how it goes.

Given that we are now expecting the OG tags to work correctly, may I ask what is the point of that button?

When you enable this, the Open Graph meta tags will be added to your site. The HTML tags are used to provide metadata about a webpage, especially when it is shared on social media networks. These tags help to control how your webpage appears in social media posts by specifying information such as the title, description, and image that should be displayed.

Hi Dominic, exactly. So why are we disabling that function?

The initial problem (the start of this thread) was that two modules on the home page were both throwing OG tags and Facebook couldn't pick the correct one. When we disabled that OG slider, Facebook (intermittently) couldn't pick any image at all.

Our first solution was to :

Unpublish the second module throwing the conflicting tags, and
Reinstate the OG slider in the template

That worked for a day but now Facebook is seeing the correct image in preview but rendering no image at all when the post is made.

If you are using another module, and that module, as well as the modules on the home page, are both throwing OG tags, I think you can disable this option.
Could you please let me know the module name that added the OG tags? I will check the module and maybe disable the OG tags of the modules.

I noticed a duplicated "og:image" meta tag on your site. To resolve this issue, please disable the "Trigger Plugin Events" option in all "Articles - Newsflash" modules. Once you've done that, make sure to clear the link thumbnail using the Facebook Sharing Debugger tool: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/.
