Smart Search doesn't work

I have a database that dates back to Joomla 1.X or 2.X, I have followed all the updates to database and modules over the years. But the update from 3 to 4 has now broken the search function, and the Smart Search will not index, I keep getting a JSON error. Is there anyway to get Smart Search to work? or is there a search extension that is recommended?

Did you try to test this Smart Search with Cassiopeia - the standard template of Joomla and see how it goes?

If the problem still happens there, you should submit the same question into Joomla forum for further help as this relates to Joomla core feature.

Will have a go at that. I have a feeling it is a database issue having older date (going back to Joomla 1.7 and 2.X)

When running the index for smartsearch it gets through 7667 of 17687 of the content before returning the JSON error
