Newbie here, wondering whether anyone can help me with some instructions on how to use the GavickPro Portfolio template, for example: how to upload pictures that show up in the homepage like in the nice demo layout?

This is feature articles in the home page menu, You can follow these steps:
1/ Create the categories from Backend > Contents > Categories.
2/ Create the Articles and assign them to the categories that you created.
3/ Go to the Menu, create the menu, and select Featured Articles type.
Then open the Blog template setting tabs to configure the layout for the articles.
