How can I set pages so that only registered users can access the page and guests cannot see the page description?

May I know which description are you referring to?
It would be good if users who are not logged in can only ever access the login and cannot access the Jomsocial pages even if they are aware of the direct links.

I think in Backend >> JomSocial > Configuration > Privacy : you can configure the privacy for Page, Group, Profile, etc...
Did you try it?
