No 404 page, redirects to homepage

Seems there is 404 page popping up so I added the system error.php to the city-guide template directory changing the code to use the 404 page out of the box. No error, nothing. Everything redirects to homepage.
Any suggestions?

Issue is that if I trigger a 404 by typing random after a regular URL, instead of a 404 error, there is a redirect to the homepage. As usual in Joomla 3x I checked if there was a error.php in the template directory of City Guide which was not. I copied from the system dir and changed the script referring the 404 page id.
Also this did not work/

aman204 it even gets better. Just type /1234 after the domain name to trigger a 404 and you will find the 404 in the search bar. Mmhh...

Nope. It partially works. Everything directly typed after the domain name (home page url) is ignored -->no 404.
However the 404 is generated if one comes from another menu. Let me give you an example:
So if you use https://www.gordonsbay.travel/joomla-content/typography and remove "graphy" a proper 404 is generated. If you use https://www.gordonsbay.travel/typo it redirects to the homepage and even more weird (and this is probably the issue) have a look at the search bar; "typo" is used as search term on the website !!!???!!! Have a look at the snippet attached.

gbtravel As suggested by @saguaros, Kindly confirm if you have tried assigning default template to see if issue persists as apart, this is core joomla feature and Custom 404 Error Page is provided by specific template in order to give a new redefined look to the specific redirected page.

Same result. Setting protostar default still redirects to the search bar on the home page.
I have tried this on two other Joomla websites I am running on the same (latest) Joomla core version and no problems at all. Issue does not occur.
I would recommend that you download a version of city-guide yourself and trial and error on that one and let me know when you fixed the problem.

Having replicated the same at local install with quickstart package of JA City Guide, Bit of weird issue as the redirection doesnt happen as envisaged to custom 404 error page for some urls although it majorly relates to Core joomla function.

Have shared the same with team member requesting to verify at their end, too and we shall revert soon

Ok, I might have found something. I have installed an out of the box quickinstall on one my other domains, without any updates or configuration.
So, when I type for instance "test" after the home page URL, I get a different error than if I type "test" after a directory or menu folder. This indicates that the error (404) handling on the home page differs from the rest and that is exactly what I was pointing at. Have a look at the following screen shots:

There is another thing which is the .htaccess being ignored.
Adding ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=44 does not have any effect at all.
You really have to look into your code what is happening with a 404 ....

Try the example with test domain (see above) wind-rose.uk with the following:
- wind-rose.uk/123test
- wind-rose.uk/index.php/123test

and you will see a totally different error handling.
Now you know where to look ;-)

Why? You can replicate this yourself in one minute? Download your own template. Why are you harvesting access details every time while you are on top of the core code?

With support threads we do ask for access details so we can check the site in question - when a problem can be seen on a quickstart we will update the quickstart and apply any solution to the users site at the same time

It isn't a case of wanting to harvest user details - in the new DGPR world having access information is not really something we want to ask for unless we do need it.

The access details can only be seen by moderators or system administrators - who are often one and the same.

paulus1031 Updated the credentials in edit field. What bothers me is that this error has been reported earlier on your forum, apparently without a solution.
That is why I keep asking why I have to do all the work like pointing out where the problem is, creating testing environments and providing access to my domains.
Now please show me that you actually doing something about the issue!!

Pursuant to which there had been another site in which you have mentioned about the relative bug which differentiates from the earlier one due to which I had requested for ftp details in order to examine the relative issue by checking the htaccess and error.php files responsible for redirection of broken links. Also, The same had been asked as I am unable to replicate any issue apart from weird issue for which I had mentioned earlier however, 404 invalid page redirects to homepage in some instances :
