No 404 page, redirects to homepage

Same result. Setting protostar default still redirects to the search bar on the home page.
I have tried this on two other Joomla websites I am running on the same (latest) Joomla core version and no problems at all. Issue does not occur.
I would recommend that you download a version of city-guide yourself and trial and error on that one and let me know when you fixed the problem.

Having replicated the same at local install with quickstart package of JA City Guide, Bit of weird issue as the redirection doesnt happen as envisaged to custom 404 error page for some urls although it majorly relates to Core joomla function.

Have shared the same with team member requesting to verify at their end, too and we shall revert soon

Ok, I might have found something. I have installed an out of the box quickinstall on one my other domains, without any updates or configuration.
So, when I type for instance "test" after the home page URL, I get a different error than if I type "test" after a directory or menu folder. This indicates that the error (404) handling on the home page differs from the rest and that is exactly what I was pointing at. Have a look at the following screen shots:

There is another thing which is the .htaccess being ignored.
Adding ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=44 does not have any effect at all.
You really have to look into your code what is happening with a 404 ....

Try the example with test domain (see above) wind-rose.uk with the following:
- wind-rose.uk/123test
- wind-rose.uk/index.php/123test

and you will see a totally different error handling.
Now you know where to look ;-)

Why? You can replicate this yourself in one minute? Download your own template. Why are you harvesting access details every time while you are on top of the core code?

With support threads we do ask for access details so we can check the site in question - when a problem can be seen on a quickstart we will update the quickstart and apply any solution to the users site at the same time

It isn't a case of wanting to harvest user details - in the new DGPR world having access information is not really something we want to ask for unless we do need it.

The access details can only be seen by moderators or system administrators - who are often one and the same.

paulus1031 Updated the credentials in edit field. What bothers me is that this error has been reported earlier on your forum, apparently without a solution.
That is why I keep asking why I have to do all the work like pointing out where the problem is, creating testing environments and providing access to my domains.

Pursuant to which there had been another site in which you have mentioned about the relative bug which differentiates from the earlier one due to which I had requested for ftp details in order to examine the relative issue by checking the htaccess and error.php files responsible for redirection of broken links. Also, The same had been asked as I am unable to replicate any issue apart from weird issue for which I had mentioned earlier however, 404 invalid page redirects to homepage in some instances :

Also, As apparently seen, 404 broken link seems to be redirecting now to homepage and not the one as shown earlier by you by way of screenshot. Ref: Screenshot

Meanwhile, Have also reported the relative issue to JA Dev. team for 404 error page being redirected to homepage in some instances. Please be patient as we would revert back soon after getting update or resolution from their end

aman204 FTP should work now and show you proper directories. Select public_html.
Your screenshot is exactly the error that should be fixed. Everything typed (to force a 404) after the homepage is redirected into the search bar instead of a proper 404.
At least you have reproduced it yourself now ;-)

The issue is not from template, its how Joomla use the redirection for the search and other component as well.
When you open a component page like search menu is part of Search component and type a wrong url
It will use as search value.
To make a test for you i created a test menu on your site.
with Url : wind-rose.uk/index.php/home-2/dfdffffdf

at the end i added random words and the outpage is same : http://prntscr.com/kedsps
that is why we asked to test it with default Joomla template in previous posts.

The error page on any template 404 utilises the Joomla core so would need to extend the Joomla core functionality and install a new component

I'm not 100% what is on the Joomla Extensions directory - I do know sh404sef offers these features but for the 404 part of the system to work it does require the seo extension options to be enabled

The extension generates a list of similar urls from its database tables and displays them on its own generated error page (not a template error page)

Inside the admin it will track all 404s and offers re-direct options to re-direct them

This extension is quite complex to use and is a commercial one e.g. requires a purchase

To do this via any template is not possible

paulus1031 I think we have sorted this one out now. From what I have seen and tested, the search bar component is causing this behaviour and this is indeed standard Joomla. Aman 204 was right.
It is a bit confusing because you call it JA Custom Search which looks like it is yours but I have tested the standard search bar component and this one does the same, no proper 404 but a record in the table from the component where you can see in the backend which search terms have been used.
The proper 404 triggered on the home page are then between the regular search terms which is confusing.
I now have to look for them in the Redirects component AND in Search Term Analysis for 404 errors.

Thank you guys for helping me out although I am still not happy. Another option is to remove the search bar but it is a must in a city guide.

There is one last thing I need to share. Google does the same ....... Just type bla bla bla in the URL bar and it ends up in the search bar :-)
The developer must have thought that Joomla needed this as well?

gbtravel The redirection feature for 404 broken links being Joomla Core feature cannot be controlled much by template

Custom 404 Error Page is provided by specific template in order to give a new redefined look to the specific redirected page.

Quoting above, Nothing much can be done by the template for redirection as the template can majorly provide custom 404 redesigned page

As suggested by Paul, You can always try and use 3rd party extension if they can derive the purpose as envisaged

Also, As Joomla 4 is going to arrive soon with exciting new features, improvements and bug fixes (Comparison J4 and J3) , You may always post your suggestion in Joomla.org forum as the same might be taken into consideration and improved for J4 🙂
