  • Migrating Jomsocial 4.7.4 on Joomla 3.10.12 to Joomla 4.x

As the title says we are updating our site from Joomla 3.10.12 to 4.x and then eventually 5.x. We just tried an extension named JMigrator to do a J3/j4 update on another site that did not have Jomsocial, and it worked out well enough that we would like to use it on this site. The workflow is to start with a blank J4.x install and then migrate everything over from the old site. If they are on the same server it's pretty simple really, and this site I'm working with now is also on the same server as our dev site. However I cannot find any info on migrating a JS instance to another domain, let alone from J3 to J4.

Should we slog our way through a J3-J4 manual update instead? At least JS would stay in place during this process. It's just always such a PIA...

Helllloooooo... is there a roadmap for this? Can a JomSocial instance be migrated from a Joomla 3.x site to a Joomla 4.x site?

    vincebodie Hello,

If the Joomla 4 site already has its own existing users, it's not possible to merge them seamlessly with the Joomla 3 site, as the user databases will be different.

However, if Joomla 4 is a new website, I recommend using Akeeba Backup to create a backup of the Joomla 3 site, restore it on the Joomla 4 site, and then follow Joomla's migration steps to upgrade to J4, including JomSocial.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards

saguaros using Akeeba Backup to create a backup of the Joomla 3 site, restore it on the Joomla 4 site

I didn't realize this is possible, I will test it out. Thanks.

vincebodie Yes, so you have all Joomla content: Users, menus, articles, ... and simply install Jomsocial latest version into this restored Joomla 3 site.

To ensure we’re aligned, here’s a recap of the steps I’ll be taking:

1/ Create a backup of your Joomla 3 (J3) site using Akeeba Backup.
2/ Restore this backup to the directory designated for your Joomla 4 (J4) site.
3/ Install the latest version of JomSocial on the restored site.
4/ Proceed with updating Joomla and all other extensions to their latest versions.
