Joomla doesn't confirm if the email address actually exists or is reachable, you can set the account activation in: Joomla admin > Users > Manage > Options and set:

"New User Account Activation" = Self or Admin

This will send a confirmation email to the user.

If they don’t receive it or cannot click it, the account won’t be activated.

This ensures the email is at least accessible by the user.
