When you go the main page and hit the link 'Blog'. A new window opens up. I don't want a new window I want the link to open in the parent window. How do I do this?

Edit your Blog menu item and in Details tab -> Target window change actual settings to Parent

Solved.
Just as a note for other users - the k2 Item Edit form forces the menu link to open in a new window e.g. parent window won't work as the k2 component forces this target window option when the link is saved
