I have a registration form. The task is to add a custom field called, "Age" and it's a drop down field of a list of ages. I'm seeing lots of ways to do this but I prefer to get a professional opinion before I venture out. I am seeing a plugin in the Plugin Manager called, "Fields - User" and it's description says, "This plugin lets you create new fields of type 'user' in any extensions where custom fields are supported". What's the best way here? Are there any free extensions that help with this? What should my approach be?
Approach: Custom field for registration form
arimakidd What's the best way here?
Hello
As i can see you already added the age drop down to your Joomla registration form and it works fine
Best approach is to use joomla core custom fileds available and do not add any other 3rd part plugin on joomla core components like registration form is
So what you have already done is perfect.

Hi Pavit,
The registration link is here
http://www.tellannie.com/index.php/register
The registration link where I am testing out the dropdown box is here
http://www.tellannie.com/index.php/register-2
It's not entirely working just yet but it is a thrid party tool called Fabrikar found here,
http://fabrikar.com/features
I don't know how to use core custom fields. Can you point me in a direction on how to achieve what I want to achieve? If I could get the dropdown going without Fabrikar that would be great.
Okay I think I have it. You can add the extra fields in the "Users->Fields" and also use the 'Field Groups' to create the group. Looks promising but at the moment my dropdown field on the main registration form is read only. Trying to get it so that users can actually select an option.
Hi arimakidd
The registration form at this url http://www.tellannie.com/index.php/register is using K2 extension which is not a joomla core , for now i disabled it ( unpublishing k2 system plugin ) to enable the joomla core
as you can see now the custom field you added previously it working fine -

I see you're getting it to work. Please don't forget to put back the Captcha/Recaptcha.
Okay, going to put back the K2 for the Captcha/Recaptcha. But yes, I see it's working
If you're in, don't enable the Captcha from Joomla. Only enable it from k2. There is an error when you enable it in both places.
And the spacing looks much better. Thank you very much. Are you going to put in the Captcha or you want me to do it?
Okay. I put it back. Now to test over again.
Testing and things work fine.
Solved.
