I want my menu to look just like the menu in the quick start here, http://www.product-adviser.com/buildr1/. How do I do that? Didn't see anything different in the template settings.
Additionally, my home page article has 2 Home titles? I noticed that the home page had 2 titles. By default the template has 'Home' on it. Where did it come from?

With the menu are you referring to the home icon and the bullets on the dropdown?
Regarding "Home" x2
This comes from the page display tab
I've changed this to use global no instead of yes
The global setting is here
Something to be aware of is that this can be a little clunky and can require this global setting to be turned on and then turned off for it to work - least that is what I've found on some sites 🙂

I want my menu to look like the prototype menu. I want the look and feel (not the icons) of the Prototype menu for my menu. A top and bottom light grey line border and white space in between. That's how I want my menu to look like..

If I really want the icons I think I know how to do that. But that ugly strip has to go.
As a result the font color has to be black. At the moment it's white cause of the dark background.

I've just logged in to the site - I would strongly recommend using a backup extension like akeeba backup This is an extension I use myself on every site I'm involved with
I do use the pro version but there is a free version available
I have changed the background colour setting and changed the menu font colours
This looks much better. Just one last thing, the thin border line to the top and bottom of the menu. Once I could get that things would be great. The arrows in the attached screenshot shows what I am talking about. Those top and bottom borders span the width of the div. This is url for the quickstart; http://www.product-adviser.com/buildr1/
With the position row there are options for the row and the container
so for the border you would want to change the settings for border on the menu container
Are you familiar with these settings?
