How do I get rid of the grey background in the screenshot?

You need to open up the template position row and then set the container background colour to transparent

Okay I need some clarification here. Which template am I configuring? I have 2. Secondly I looked into the Home Page template and the background has nothing in it. I can't put 'Transparent' it only takes the usual html hex value.
I just clicked save and compile and it has applied changes including removed the background
