I’m looking for a 3 column portal template that could easily be tweaked to look identical to http://espn.go.com/ or http://www.businessweek.com. Is there an existing template from Joomlart that could be used to achieve this style with minor modifications?

You can see 3 column layout template in JA Helio, Rutile….
Almost our templates built with 2 column layout, but you can get patch to convert from 2 columns layout to 3 columns layout ( left + body +right ) from large amount of our templates such as: Kulanite, Zibal, Dravity, Teline, Teline II, Mesolite….Go to template at Templates Club Member – Restrict Member only to get the patch.

Thank you very much Hung Dinh. I was not aware such a patch existed.
My intent is to use a Joomlart template as the starting point to clone the http://www.espn.com layout. I have posted the project to Joomlacers. However, if any of my fellow Joomlart members would be interested in doing this project for a nominal fee, please PM me.
