Did u changed the domain path ?

For the problem of removal of category , yes you can remove unwanted category on site and unwanted menu items too , but before removal of article or category you should also remove or change the menu or module where they are used ,
Becuase you trashed or unpublish an item that is used by a menu or module , you are getting this error .
Its not due to template ,its Joomla behaviour , if an article or category is used by a menu and article is unpublished you will get such error .
