I’ve added _hilite to the module class suffix box but it doesn’t seem to be changing anything, any advice?

The CSS is only set up for hilite to work on the center column. See this post on how to set it up for the sides… http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/all-about-the-module-suffix/
