I would like to modify the JA-News category tab links.
The question, with pictures, is explained here:http://canadawatch.netfirms.com/canadawatch/ja_news_problem.htm
I know that it can be done – (like with menu items) – but I can’t figure out how to do it.
I need your expertise and help – PLEASE.ShannonN FriendShannonN

I would imagine that some technical support be available from JoomlArt. This is a paid membership and tech. support was included, if I remember correctly.
The problem I am having results from the fact that the JA-News scripts are not perfect – for example wrong pathway in the navigation line, inconsistent linking to the tabular display layout, etc. In this situation, I believe that help in fixing these issues should be included in the membership.
Practically, the cost of membership = the cost of the template + technical support.
I don’t think that an advice to pay Menalto for fixing the imperfections of the template that I have already paid for, is a fair solution here. Frankly, I expect more from JoomlArt than that. And I will appreciate their help immensely. Matter of principle.
Thanks, anyway.

I hear what you are saying but Joomlart support is not as helpful, as quick or as included as it should be, that’s why they have been using community helpers to do it for em on the cheap.
The suggestion to use Menalto was just one that would probably guarantee fast response etc etc

July 15, 2007 at 3:23 pm #224250Maybe if someone from the JA Staff could chime in here and say if the new release of the JA News Module would fix the problems occurring for canadawatch it would provide for some hope of resolving the problems. Just a thought. Anyone from JA in the know could do this.

The better solution is for JA to give the man the later version and say use it see if it fixes it hey, pm them canadawatch and ask for the latest ja news? I believe you should be entitled to upgrades and bug fixes

Hey ShannonN, In another thread JA has said they will be releasing a new updated version soon. But what they haven’t said is if everyone will be able to download it or not. Since the last release was 1.1.3 which only the JAEC could download I would suspect the same for the newest release. It would be a good idea for JA to at least give this to all using the Teline template which came with the JA News module.
July 15, 2007 at 10:53 pm #224276That’s exactly how I feel about it. Thank you for your “moral” support. I will try to get their attention.

The new version is available to us developer members and while the internal version number remains 1.12 I’m assured it is an updated 1.13 version when and if JA releases this with a template is anyone’s guess its a shame they don’t tell us clients more or make announcements any more, I haven’t used it on a site yet haven’t the time to play around with em these days
July 18, 2007 at 1:35 am #224452I would really appreciate someone from JoomlArt to read this thread and to answer it, if you will, please.
The detail I need help with most is:
How do I make the category tabs in Ja-News link to a tabular display of content items without the black bar with Headings and without other categories underneath?
The choice to show tabular list of content items without the Title Headings and without other categories is available while creating a Table – Content Category menu item. Therefore, there is a script within Ja-News that does it already. I would like to modify the Ja-News category tab script to do the same.
Will really appreciiate help with this issue.
July 19, 2007 at 1:37 am #224553This is a community driven support site. I don’t think your purchase granted any kind of service level agreement or guaranteed response time.. JA Teline is not an easy to use template and it has a somewhat steep learning curve. You will just have to go with the flow. You should not have to modify any of the scripts to get it working correctly.
Despite that… it is a very well designed and thought out template… if you are already familiar with the workings of the way the page layout thing works.
I started to visit your site to see if I could look at the code of that page… Since I got a boilerplate page from your ISP, I’m guessing your site is still in development.
I’m not sure if what I am about to suggest will create a bigger problem for you. I don’t have any idea of how many articles you have loaded. Proceed at your own risk. If you follow my advice and it blows up…
The easiest way to get up and running is to install JA Teline Quick Start. It installs from the browser. If the install runs correctly, the template will be installed just like the demo site. There is a tutorial earlier in the forum that will walk you through it.
Once it is installed correctly, you can explore the components menu and figgure how the JA News componet is configured.
To get your Climate Watch article online, just rename one of the existing categories so it ends up in the position you want. The categories in the JA News portion are numbered in order… just change the order until it is where you want it.
There are a couple of other possibilities:
Unzip the quickstart template in a folder on your local computer and FTP the components and template files to the server. If you are familiar with MyPHPadmin, you may be able to import the SQL database. This is a somewhat risky approach if you are not comfortable
If you re on any kind of news deadline, what I have suggested may not be the best approach.
If your ISP uses cPanel and Fantastico, you will have to isntall the quick start via the browser. I did that way and do quite a bit of configuring to get the permissions correctly.
Can I give you some advice?
If you plan on using the template on a production site, you might want to consider installing it a second time as a subdomain and making experimental changes on that site instead of your production site. My site, http://aroundcentralflorida.com gets about 5 million page views a month and I would never make changes on the live server. It’s not a Joomla site yet, but I have it set up in a staging environment. Joomla with this template is great. We’re actually considering ditching Ektron in favor of Joomla.
Building or changing the templates is not for the faint of heart. but it is way easier than movable type.
If you have any questions you want to ask, direct it to my personal mail, emeryj (at) cfl.rr.com
This is not an open invitation for everyone to ask me for tech support.

July 19, 2007 at 2:21 am #224561Welcome emeryjay! Nice bit of writing but the Teline template was released in April and everything you suggested has been covered. The support issue is an ongoing problem that you will learn more about as you surf this forum. Good luck with moving your site to the Teline template but you are most likely on version 1.1.2 of the JA News Module and this version will come back to haunt you. This is where the problem really is not the Teline template as whole. The original version 1.1.1 of JA News initially was very good and this is the version that I still use but there were some issues with some mambots, components and differing modules that the 1.1.2 version was supposed to fix. What it did was create some problems with the module itself and has been spiralling out of control ever since. Hence the issue with support from the JA Staff. Then the JA Staff created the Extensions Club and promptly came out with version 1.1.3 of JA News and did not allow anyone other than the extension club members to download it. And after all of that the version 1.1.3 was no better than 1.1.2. It has been an ongoing problem with promises from JA that have never been met. Welcome to the JA World!

July 19, 2007 at 9:54 pm #224617I am not going to comment too much on this other than canadawatch is flooding my “new posts” screen… :p
Ok, a few comments then:
1: Yes, strange that they don’t reply to your post.
2: Personally, I don’t see that you are entitled to support as to changes to the ja-news module or any other changes you want. I am not saying you are not supposed to get any help, just that you are not paying to get support on everything. Support is sort of an additional to the templates. It is a template club and not a support and template club. Don’t misunderstand me on this point, I do feel you are entitled to support but this could be a simple message explaining to you that “we don’t support that type of requests” or similar. You are asking about modifications to the ja-news. ( at least I haven’t found the same bugs as you indicate are there but maybe I am missing something? )
3: I do, as previously stated agree that you do deserve a reply at least, no matter what that reply is. To me it seems a bit excessive to post that many posts but that is not up to me to “judge”. I just fear that you are making things worse for yourself ( I don’t know, they might ban you or something ) Again, I am just saying what I think here. I am just a regular user myself and would like to see better, improved and faster support like any other guy. However, I think Joomlart needs to specify ( perhaps in the “buying process” ) how much support is included when you buy a template. That to make it easier for people to understand what type of support you can expect.I have been a member since 2005 and I still aren’t completely sure of what type of support you could expect.
Either way, I hope you get your reply and that Joomlart can solve this matter for you ( and for the rest of us reading all your posts )
Good luck and goodnight from me.. 🙂
