I have a non-Joomla website that I am considering redesigning from scratch with JA Erio. I do not want my main site offline while I’m developing/testing the Erio template site. So, I installed the Erio template on a hosting account I already use. I thought I would test it out using the dedicated static IP address, and if everything works, I would point my name servers for the domain name at the new site’s IP address, and then go live with the site.

I successfully installed the template and was able to see the quickstart demo version by typing in my IP address. However, when I enter my IP address/administrator, I just receive an error message. My question is how do I access the backend when I haven’t moved the domain name servers at the hosting account, yet? I thought I was able to do this in the past, but this is my first 1.7 template to work with.

Maybe this is a hosting company issue/question, but it seems like there should be an easy way for me to access the control panel with an IP address alone in Joomla. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Brent:

What if you were to set up the Erio site as a subdomain – e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/yoursite2 … install the Erio quickstart into that subdomain folder and then try to access it that way e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/yoursite2/administrator

    OR

if your webhost account allows free add on domains, set up a temporary add on domain and install the Erio quickstart there – that way you can have one url for the add on — e.g. http://www.addondomain.com/administrator

    Just a couple of suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions. I used some of my free domain credits to register a variation of our primary domain that I should have registered years ago, so it accomplished two goals. I couldn’t find a better option searching online. I found a similar post in another forum that suggested using a ghost/clone tool to move the completed site to the new domain/host when completed. I may do this when the site is completed to maintain my primary domain. I have SEO concerns about redirecting to a second URL permanently.

I guess my only experience with Joomla has been building new sites with new URLs. Let’s say you have a customer with an existing outdated HTML site, and you are building a new Joomla site for them. Is there really no way to setup a hosting account, and build a site without transferring the URL (besides the methods you suggested)? I still feel like I’m missing something obvious.

I’m not 100% I am understanding the dilemma completely. Would not a url + website transfer (with all associated databases/content and meta content) travel with the site to the new hosting server?

Again, if I am misunderstanding the issue, I apologize.
