How would one go about adjusting the spacing/padding of the items in the Main Nav ??
(using Joomla 1.5 version)

In other words, I want to adjust the space on the right/left of the nav items and the spacer/divider on either side.

Nevermind, figured it out . . . . the css rule is within the respective menu system you are using for your Main Nav.
In my case –> #jasdl-mainnav a {
