Hi,

In every article you can set in tab Parameters (Advanced) an Alternative Read more:

When I fill in a few words it doesn’t display on the live site.

Is this a template issue, or…?

Check back up the menu tree:

Check your article…and see if what you want read more to say is there.
Then open the Menu item that shows that article and check the “Read More” settings in its’ parameter.
And if that Menu item is a sub item of a higher menu item…then you do the same for it…until you walk all the way back up to top of the menu.

It sounds as though somewhere along the menu food chain, something is turned off.
