God, another security release from Joomla, I mean it is good that they keep up. But, it would be nice if a Joomla security group does a comprehensive review. But, I guess when it is free, we can’t expect too much.

You shouldn’t blame Joomla, you should blame the hacking script kiddie scumbags who waste their time trying to destroy peoples work. You should also blame the local governments for not shooting them all on sight.

    Hi phill luckhurst,

I am not really blaming anybody. I was just feel frustrated.

More important, I just updated so many sites. But, I essentially had to start from the beginning for reasons explained below.

Also, I just uploaded the four (4) previous version of the QuickStart for Joomla 1.5.9-Teline IIv1.6 — to use as independent demo pages for the Optimization collaborative project that we were discussing in the forums. I was about to install them, but when I looked at Joomla, a new one just came out.

Normally, this should not be a problem. Just update the Joomla. But, that is not the case if you use Joomlart templates.

In the case of Teline II, there were quite radical changes in the templates when they updated to Joomla 1.5.9-Teline II v1.6, but the changes in the termplate were not indicated in the changelog.

I have quite many files that were customized in the templates, including the CSS files.

Up to Joomla 1.5.8-Teline II, I was able to just upload the correct Joomla update, and then for the Teline II, I just changed the files that I customized. That did not work during the update for Joomla 1.5.9-Teline II v1.6, suddenly some of the features are acting up, like the Hot Topic.

I thought it might be the server or something, because my hosting company upgraded the server softwares. I did all sorts of things, including trying to replicate the sites in other servers where I have accounts. They were not working.

I requested help in the forum — no staff was helping. After almost a week trying, I accidentally found out that Joomlart had radically changed some of the template modules; but I am not sure exactly if it is only the modules that I found where Joomlart made changes.

There was no record in the changelog of any change. This is very serious because unless you uninstall the entire template, you can never be sure if you got all the changes that Joomlart did.

I have appealed before that they include information of the files changed and if possible, if there are forum threads that discussed the changes. I requested also tha Joomlart change the date of download file (just like many companies do) if they ever made. But, Joomlart did not want to do this, so you won’t know exactly. If you look at Teline Ii for example, the latest download file is still stuck with a date in 2008, close to the release date.

Anyone who has such problem may be so kind and post it here in addition.

    1. I never heard about that any Joomlart.com template is affected by a Joomla release update. I just updated one of my sites with a JA template without errors and same with highly customized ones with the previous updates with not one error. In general all clubs keep it with “no changes to the Joomla core” files just because the users must be able to update their joomla systems in the future. Also, the sites I updated where initially installed via Joomlart.com Quickstarts and show no errors after the updates, what only can lead to the conclusion that also Joomlart.com does not change anything in the Joomla core when they pack a Quickstart package with a current Joomla release or update their packages.
    2. Now when somebody changes corefiles, it is clear that these files are not part of the template and may be altered or replaced with new ones when updating. What core files are not: At least all what is stored inside any custom template, module, plugin, extension folders, content inside the images folder and in general any folder you add to your server in addition. Templates like JA Purity, beez and Rhuk_Milkyway are seen as core elements and are always updated via the new Joomla releases. What are core files and how do I know what files will be altered or replaced when doing an update? See the next point.
    3. Now it is mentioned that “the changelog should contain what files are about to update”. Seriously, as soon you open the folder of the update package, you see all the files in the folder that are about to replace the ones on your server. A Joomla update is not a complete set of Joomla files but contains only those that need to be updated.

I have summed this up on Saturday for those feeling insecure with the update process:

What you are talking about here has nothing to do with the Joomla version or updates. You mention that fact that at point of time the Package was updated to 1.5.9, also the reported bugs were fixed and some enhancements were added to the template as part of the template update which may have been done in one step with the Joomla updating.

Also here, this is nothing unusual, normally nobody makes a template update with replacing the old installed package with a new one that contains fixes and new Joomla version as soon you may have changed something inside the template on your server. To await that nothing will be changed when doing a template update this way, is very wishful. The only way would be to not update the template but to update Joomla. As whenever you spend a few months with a template you may have added all those fixes and enhancements to the template already on your own and it is really too much awaited that any change in a template version will be documented by the developers.

For me it is okay to also manually add any fixes to the old template I use, but mostly, as so much was changed by me already, those changes to not need to be added anymore and I would say this is same with a lot of other members here. And when it is about a new Mootools version, you can replace this also manually. In the last step, you can add any single change manually and for the price you pay here, this is not awaited too much.:)

<blockquote>”What template clubs for Joomla always update their Template packages with the newest Joomla releases?”</blockquote>

Well, Joomlart.com is one of the few who actually always update their JA Quickstarts to the newest Joomla version. Personally, I have checked out a few other clubs too and at a club called Yoo***** and one other called Shape*, you will never get those. They release the template with the at dato actual Joomla release, never update those again and when you look over any older template of these clubs you will see that some are still even packed with Joomla 1.5.6. So I do not know what is wrong with Joomlart’s way to always update the quickstarts when a new release of Joomla is out and to also update the templates themselves in case any bugs needed to be fixed or enhancements to be made when a new Joomla is released. This way also the new IE8 fixes with matching stylesheets were added to all the JA Templates when Joomla 1.5.9 came out. Now, I had to apply such fix to my old JA Template, but did not reinstall or replaced the template completely, I simply ported over the needed added codes and also the ie8.css to my old system and good it is but it did not work at all. The reason it did not work is clear, I changed too much on the template that anything could be fixed with an extra css file only, a fix only made to the template how it is when you download it here and again it can’t be awaited that those fixes still shall work on customized sites where module positions were moved or heavy css changes were done. You literally become responsible for anything as soon you change the templates a bit more than replacing content of the CMS and that should be okay.

    Thanks!

Can you please tell us the main difference between Teline II v1.5 and Teline II v1.6?

Also, show us that you have actually installed Joomla 1.5.x-Teline II of yours that was installed before latest, e.g., Joomla 1.5.3-Teline II v.1.4, and go through the sequence of upgrading, until your reach Joomla 1.5.9-Teline II v1.6.

If you cannot show us, any working Teline II site beyond a demo page, you don’t know what you are talking about.
