June 23, 2008 at 11:01 am #130029Hi Everyone
I’m getting more and more frustrated with the default article editor (Joom 1.5.3 and Teline II).
Today I created an article, translated to French and published, no problem … 20 minutes and all is well.
I then spend over 1 hour, messing around with the article to try and get it to publish correctly. This is the worst text editor I’ve ever seen!
Article looks fine:
However, on main section page, the first paragraph will not show and this causes problem with ‘read more’ button:
So, what happened to the first paragraph?
We have problems like this every single day. Also with the ‘wraparound’ on photographs. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t?
Any fix? Any other editor I can try? Anyone else having these problems?
Also, if I copy and paste the text from another application (Quark, Word, InDesign, etc.), we have even worse problems. Sometimes no text at all is published?
Help :((

Do not do this. I dont know how familiar you are with html, but remember that when you make copy+paste the text from word (and other programs) and paste in to the joomla, you allways copy not only the text but and stylesheets, layers …
So my tip is when you copy the text from the word, past the text first in NotePad. And you will be sure that your text not include stylesheets… After copy the text from Notepad and paste in to the Joomla editor.
If you use Mac, try to find some simple editor.

</blockquote>Thanks Citron. I already do this on the Mac. I copy from other apps (Word, Quark, etc.), and then paste into “Text Edit” which is the equivalent of notebook. This should strip out all style sheets, code, etc.
However, the article above, which I still have problems with, I re-typed, directly into the Article Editor from a printed copy … no copy and paste!
Also, I translated to French using Joom!Fish and had the same problems, even though I typed from new again.
Very strange :((

June 23, 2008 at 11:27 am #255497I know what you mean. I have same problem. For example if i have the text like that:
today at 10
tomorrow at 10Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text….
At the Ja-news module i see only:
Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text. Here is the longer text….
Probably there is some calculation and say – if the text string < 10 chars = skip it.

June 23, 2008 at 9:35 pm #255658Have you tried using JCE? I use it on most of my sites without too many problems.
I just realised, it looks like you have added the “read more” link too high up in the text. Thats why the button is showing directly underneath the image. When setting an article up on my own site, I always publish the article first then see how the text wraps around the image. I try to make sure that there is always at least one line of text under the image and thats where I place the “read more” button.
You can see an example of this here http://www.bikerworkshop.com/news.html

Thanks for the replies

I’m using TinyMCE 2.0 … seems highly flaky to me! I’ll check out JCE.<em>@nigelta 61545 wrote:</em><blockquote>I just realised, it looks like you have added the “read more” link too high up in the text. Thats why the button is showing directly underneath the image.

This is exactly the problem. Not that I didn’t have enough text before ‘read more’, but when I publish the article, the first paragraph got removed … hence moving the ‘read’ more up by that amount!Cheers

June 24, 2008 at 6:59 am #255735Hi Chris,
What is your default max characters in the JA News module?
<em>@questbg 61356 wrote:</em><blockquote>

Help :((</blockquote>I use a simple PageSpinner for many of my internet text edits. If you copy from any of the above, do not paste it directly to the Joomla edit page — paste it into a simple editor like PageSpinner A simple .txt file will serve the same purpose.
Why is this critical?.
The reason for the resulting problems from the said programs is that while it appears as if the copied material is just plain text, they actually come with all sorts of tags or mark ups that define the layout from these applications.
Just imagine if you copied a file from the above that was tabled so that the page width would be 600px — it won;t fit the width of the Home page space (width) alloted for each Sectiuon. Guess what happens in this example — if the table starts from the beginning, or the table starts after the first intro sentence?
The worst that could happen is when copying the marked up materials, you may copy the opening tags but not the end tags, or tabs
Here’s the rule, an open tag. such as “div” or “span” (tor tab) will be closed by the next appropriate “close tag” that it finds. If the next appropriate “close tag” happen to be the close tag of the skeleton of a section?
So, this is not the fault of the editor, or Joomla or Teline II, but what you inadvertently imported into the Joomla site. To avoid this, I paste it first in a PageSpinner ($25) or a simple txt file editor.

June 24, 2008 at 1:10 pm #255821Hi Cornelio
I do paste into a simple text editor first (Text Edit), which comes free with the Mac. I’ve also tried pasting into word first and then into the Editor, but same problems. If I type directly into the editor, no problems! So I guess you’re right, there’s still something ‘hidden’ that the simple text editor is not stripping out.
Ah well, thank goodness I can type quickly! 😉

June 25, 2008 at 1:34 pm #256116Hi People
I really need a working editor (Mac OSX compatible) right now!
TinyMCE will put me out of business.
I’ve just created a brand new article (7 minutes), translated this into French (15 minutes).
I then spend 52 minutes trying to get the ‘image wraparound’ to work (it still doesn’t, even though I checked the HTML and horizontal offset is set to 18 px).
Then, the text, oh my goodness, what a mess.
Front page – photo only, not text at all
Category page – photo and the third paragraph of the article
Article page – all text OK except of course, the image wraparound isn’t working again .. as usual. Please can somebody point me in the way of a decent article editor for Joomla 1.5.3 that’s Mac compatible so I can ditch this rubbish.
OK. Rant over. If I have to spend 50 minutes per article due to bugs in the editor, then I will be out of business.
Thanks
