January 10, 2011 at 4:46 am #158528My site was acting weird at times, modules weren’t showing up when visiting the site, and some other weird stuff. Since I had backed up my site, I decided to reinstall everything to see if that was the problem. BUT that was a big mistake because when I installed the backup (meaning I reinstalled my database from scratch but I use the files I had when backing up my site the last time. I thought this would restore everything to the way I had it) I realized that the template was not the same as it was. I LOST all the articles I had created, I LOST the format I had on the site… That means I have to redo alot of changes I had. PLEASE someone explain to me how the backup works! Is it supposed to be like that? if something goes wrong and you try to use the backup you have, you are going to loose all your changes? What If I am uploading lots of info for 6 months and then all of the sudden I need to restore my site, I will loose every article I have uploaded?
I dont understand this, I thought every change I made was going to be there after uploading all the files to the server again. Only the pictures I use for the articles are still on the images folder, but all the articles and the blocks I had created are gone….. :((
Also some of the components and plugins I had uploaded to the site are gone….
What can I do?
BTW. I had backed up my site for the last 2 weeks, so I have several backups. Im using akeeba backup.

January 10, 2011 at 11:30 am #371116A back-up consists of 2 major parts:
– files (joomla installation, components, modules etc.) these are .php, .xml, .html files when accessing your server’s public html directory
– table records – a MySQL database which contains majority of the settings, configurations, and the CONTENT; the database has all articles, text etc. you entered when working on the site. So, to have a copy of the back-uped site you should restore both – the files AND the database (but not initial database created by Joomla install).
Here you can read more about Joomla back-up.

January 10, 2011 at 11:58 am #371119For backing up a Joomla site, I strongly recommend you to use Akeeba Backup component. If you use it, than you will see how it is easy and perfect.
Also you can easily restore your akeeba backuped files whenever you want.elmundo_news Friendelmundo_news

January 10, 2011 at 3:17 pm #371130Thanks. Im using akeeba backup, Does this save the database created by the joomla installation? since I have erased my last database on my server, that means I lost all the articles I created?
how do I backup both files (joomla installation, components, modules) and table records (the MySQL that contains majority of the settings and content)?gray Friendgray

January 10, 2011 at 3:42 pm #371135Yes, akeeba backup should contain both – files and the database.
Please refer to the component’s documentation, in particular “Restoring back-ups” section for more information.1 user says Thank You to gray for this useful post

January 10, 2011 at 3:43 pm #371136If you go to Akeeba backup’s configuration page, you can see which parts of your site to include or exclude for backup. You can set whatever you want (all site with databases, only files and folders, only database etc.)
If you want to learn more, you can visit akeeba backup’s website and see the documents and videos…elmundo_news Friendelmundo_news

January 11, 2011 at 2:07 am #371232ok, so do you think I can get everything back to normal? I read over the links provided on gray’s post, but im kind of confused. I have my last akeeba backup files, is that everything I need? or how do I restore my site with the files i have.
Whats the default settings for the backup? include or exclude?
So whats the process when changing everything to a new server and domain? how do I transfer everything without losing anything?
Im sorry if I ask alot of questions but im new to this….
Thanks
