When I (as visitor) change from wide to narrow screen, the banner (i e not the header) is too large, and thus goes into the right column. Is it possible to have different banners for the wide and narrow (as with the headers), or will I have to make the banner with the narrow screen in mind from the beginning, and thus make it smaller?

You can have both sizes with some work, havent looked at it yet but its possible to do that
