Can I install polaris and view my current site (with its variations in photos etc) with ‘breaking’ my current site? I presume I just cahnge default to polaris and view it and when finished change back to my current template with its unique photos etc..??

dinosaur.au, you can change to any template from the Admin CP, however I think you should decide which template you will use for the site before updating content and installing another extensions…
Sometimes contents (especially photos, images) are part of the templates and needed to be well-organized and fine tuned to match with the color and design of the template
