Ok – I’m not a newbie with Joomla – but this has me stumped.

THIS PROBLEM IS UNIQUE TO THIS TEMPLATE – I HAVE ANOTHER ONE, FROM A DIFFERENT PROVIDER, ALSO ON THIS SITE AND IT WORKS FINE.

Once I install iolite (whether it’s “default or not” it won’t let me modify or overwrite any file in the installation including CSS, HTML, and images. I tried through Joomla, ftp, and the backend file server on my host. Nothing works.

If I try to edit the CSS – the normal way through Joomla’s Template Manager I get:

    Operation Failed: Could not open/home/welcomeh/public_html/templates/ja_iolite/css/template_css.css

If I edit and try to upload via ftp – I get “critical transfer error” “Permission denied”

The only way I can make changes is to update it offline, uninstall the iolite template, create a new package with the modifications and then reinstall – A COMPLETE PAIN.

    Any ideas?

    thanks,
    lydia

on the template parameters page, does it say that the template is writable or non writable. it should be in red or green someplace near the top.?

in 1.5.x series you have to change the permissions on those files every time you go to make a change to 777.

this is a joomla security feature. not a template feature or issue.

you can change the permissions in joomlxplorer or by http://FTP..

now as for the critical “critical transfer error” “Permission denied” when using FTP, that is due to server file ownership settings. this is not a template or joomla issue but is determined by your host. If you get this error it means that apache owns the file and not the user, so you will have to use joomlxplorer to upload files and change the permissions.

its a royal PITA and I go through this all the time when my clients use cheap hosting solutions.

try to find a host that uses PHPsuexec for file permissions and these issues will go away and the website will be more secure.

again, this is not a template or joomla issue, its done by the host.

I’m not using a CHEAP hosting solution – I use a TOP TIER FULL SERVICE host and have never had a JOOMLA problem (or any other PHP problem) in the FIVE YEARS I’VE BEEN WITH THEM. Nor do I have a problem with the other templates I’ve installed on the site or any of my other sites whether they’re 1.0 or 1.5 – ALL OF THOSE ARE FROM ONE OF JOOMLA ARTS COMPETITORS.

So if you want to try and help instead of responding with nasty, pass the buck crap please do – otherwise let someone else help.

    It’s Joomla 1.0.15 – NOT 1.5

template – index.php is WRITABLE and I have NO PROBLEM getting to it – when I try to retrieve the CSS from the template management screen I get:

    Operation Failed: Could not open/home/welcomeh/public_html/templates/ja_iolite/css/template_css.css

But when it displays the site it does pull the css correctly.

no where did your specify your version and as the error you were getting IS an issue on 1.5.x, i BLINDLY took a shot at helping you..

in trouble shooting your issue, and in an effort to get more information and assist you I asked if the files where writable. it was not a stupid question.

I was not accusing you of using cheap hosting, i was just pointing out that it is an issue with cheap hosting. again, trying to help you

what part of “critical transfer error” “Permission denied” would not be a permissions error.

On one of the hosts I’m stuck with I get that error because the files are owned by apache, not the user. Check and see who owns your files? again. not a stupid request.

there was nothing nasty about my post, but your reply sure was. So….you asked if anyone has any ideas, if your not going to accept them and treat people poorly because its not what you want to hear, your answers to help requests will be few.

I’m in this forum daily and have a good reputation and tons of answers, but as requested, from this point forward you will receive no assistance from me.
