I have changed background color via template.css editing #eee on other color. Though borders of module boxes are grey
Pls do not say to look via firebug or view code swithching compress css off.

I think that you should use firebugs addon and disable compress css for developing

You can easily find the part where you need to make adjustments.Regards,
