I went inside theme-magic and changed the text font from 14px to 18px. The text on the main articles has changed to the desired size. However I see that also the size of the text in the mastheader has also changed.

How can I only change the text of the main body of the page?

    Hi
In this case you have to override the article title css only. Use custom.css file to override the style code.
To check the style classes use inspect element or firebug from browser .

    Hello

I am sorry to come back with the same issue.

I want to change the font in the body of the main article, along with h1, h2 etc. All should increase proportionally.

I want to keep the main menu and masthead fonts, margins etc the same. I want to keep the margins of the main menu the same. Maybe I want to change the fonts too, but this is minor.

You said: "Use custom.css file to override the style code."

Do I actually create a file and name it custom.css? And were do I place it?

Go to /css/custom.css file in the template folder .
