Hi everyone,
I’m working on a website for a client, using JA Rochea as a base: http://www.theweddingring.ca/hessenland/
I’ve read through every thread on this forum and I can’t find anything help me change the top header image to an animated GIF (or any other format other than JPG, for that matter), so I’d like to pose the question to all of you talented people out there!
Here is the image the client would like to replace the header image with: http://www.theweddingring.ca/hessenland/templates/ja_rochea/images/headers/sh01-bg1.gif
I’m aware of lines 65 through 81 in ja_vars.php and understand that far… however, just changing (in line 76 and 80) “/images/headers/$ja_headerimg-bg1.jpg” to “/images/headers/$ja_headerimg-bg1.gif” hasn’t done anything.
We’re using Joomla! 1.5. Any guidance on this issue would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.
p.s. This is my first crack at anything Joomla! so please excuse me if this is an obvious newbie request.

March 25, 2009 at 7:56 pm #298040In the administrative area of your Web site…goto EXTENTIONS > MODULE MANAGER and look for “JA_Newsflash”. On the right hand side are the Parameters for controling that area. That’s where you want to make the changes. If you are using only one image (an animated gif) then you need to make sure there are NO ARTICLES with that Section and/or Category.
This is are relatively old template and pages through actually “Articles” to do the slideshow effect. Since you are wanting to create the effect using an animated gif…then you just need the one article that doesn’t advance (you may later decide to put each individual image in its own article and let the template do its work.
But for what you want, simply create a new article with just your animated gif in it, no text, title off, etc…and set it for Section: Newsflashes – Category: Newsflash and it should pop up.
I’d also set the rolling delay time and animation time to zero…since you are only going to show the one image.
Hope this helps.

I had been following this thread, tried replicating the same on my localhost, as you said. It works only half way. The animated gif doesnot cover the full width of the header and leaves much of the space over its head too. If required i can post the screenshots of the same. May be the guy wants to replace the header background (jpg) over which the newsflashes floats and put the gif over there.
I was also wondering about the size of the gif file, its 1.2 MB with 18 frame count. Thats going to slow the site terribly.
March 25, 2009 at 8:28 pm #298046Thank you for your replies!
jbrett – The JA Newsflash doesn’t cover the space I’m looking for. I’d like to replace, basically, images/headers/sh01-bg1.jpg with images/headers/sh01-bg1.gif
Can this be done?
drarvindc – Good point on file size, thank you. I may do a SWF or something instead, but the issue still remains… How do I use another file type other than JPG in place of the header images?
Please let me know if you need more information from me, I’m happy to post.

Not quite understanding “doesn’t cover the space”…to me it looks like it fits perfectly.
Again…find the article with the shot you want to replace (sh01-bg1.jpg)…and simply replace it (sh01-bg1.gif)

.</blockquote>Thanks for the screenshot – I made the GIF to be the right size of the Header Image, yes, so it would fit well if the original sh01-bg1.jpg was replaced.
However, you’ve lost me… I can’t find an article with sh01-bg1.jpg in order to ‘simply replace it’ with the GIF. When I create a Newsflash article, as drarvindc said, it doesn’t cover the full width of the Header Image and keeps a lot of space ontop of it, too. Please see my example after completing your original steps here, but with the addition of setting the ‘Height of div’ to 205 (which is the height of the Header Image): http://www.theweddingring.ca/hessenland/testheaderimage.html
If this is the right way but just isn’t complete, please let me know.
Is there not a way to replace the JPG Header Images (found in images/headers/) with GIFs? Please refer to my original post (at the top) for more details on what I found/know so far.
Thanks to everyone for your time and attention!

March 27, 2009 at 3:46 pm #298503Thanks for the example…very helpful.
It appears the image is actually in a different module than Newsflash…and is appearing in either User 1 or Breadcrumbs area rather than “Top” as it should be. In the position it is in, it is defaulting with a 230px left margin…and thus the big shift to the right and the squeeze on its size.If you want to create a temporary admin user and PM me the user/pass, I’ll be glad to get in and take a look for you.
Also can you attach or send privately the /template/index.php file…not the main joomla index.php file…but the template’s main file. It actually may have been hard coded in there for some reason.

John.</blockquote>Sure, John – thanks for the quick reply. I checked and JA Newsflash is in ‘top’ position. I’ll send you the file now.

March 27, 2009 at 6:31 pm #298547And just so we’re all on the same page…
In your ARTICLES MANAGER…click on the CATEGORIES column…and scroll down to see if you see any articles that are set to “NEWSFLASH”. Are there any? – If not…tell me.
If there are…open each of them. Do any of them have the main image currently on your web site inside…the one you are trying to replace. When you find one with the image inside…replace that image with your rotating gif image. And Save.
Once back in the ARTICLE MANAGER Disable all articles in the NEWSFLASH category, EXCEPT the one with the new image.
I know we may be going over the same area again…but I’m still trying to get my head around the issue.
Thanks,
John.March 27, 2009 at 8:22 pm #298568I’m sorry I missed the above post before PMing you, John – but just to confirm for everyone else:
There was only one article under Newsflash, which was the misfit Header Image replacement attempt.FYI everyone else reading this, John’s solved the Header Image issue by adjusted the index.php, I’m just waiting to hear how he did it! If he doesn’t post the solution in this thread, I’ll be sure to. 🙂

March 27, 2009 at 8:26 pm #298569Okay to hard code your page to do what you want…
In the Template’s index.php file:
Just above the <!— END HEADER —> comment line you’ll see coding similar to the following. To replace the images just change the file name (highlighted in RED) to whatever your image file is called. And make sure you place the image in your /images/header folder.
<div id="ja-subhead" style="background: url(<?php echo $tmpTools->templateurl()."/images/headers/sh01-bg1.gif";?>) no-repeat bottom left;">
<div class="innerpad"><jdoc:include type="modules" name="top" style="xhtml" />
</div>
</div>
CAVEAT: What is happening above is replacing the Background of the “Top” position. Those of you using NEWSFLASH to show changing images will have to disable NEWSFLASH for the pages in which you want the background to appear.
Have fun!
