There are two columns on the right, right1 and right2 plus we have the mass positions. Do you want to style all of them with a background colour or just individual modules? Or do you want to change the whole of the hatched area.

The code Khoand posted above will change the whole background of a single column on the right. It will affect all of the modules in the right1 column. If you want to change the background of individual modules then we can create a custom class and you can apply that to any modules. Incidently, changing the background colour of modules is a feature that when this template us upgraded to J1.7 you will find is part of the new Joomla core so no messing about with css needed.
