I want to have a different blue block colour in the footer area of the theme than in the header area. But there seems only one image (header-bg2.gif) for this and when I change it, it changes in the header and the footer? Any help in separating these 2 elements would be very helpful :-[

yes acctually the header-bg2.gif is used in the whole page, the main area just covers it by a while bg. And as that is the way the page has been layouted I find no easy way to achive your goal.
