Here is what I did; hope it helps you.

When I examined the default.php mentioned, and the CB mod_cblogin, it seemed to me that the logic was so different that it made no sense to me to attempt to modify it. What we really want is to be able to use the CB login, unmodified, in that position. So I just put the CB Login in that position, set it to use the module suffix of ja_login and set it to horizontal and compact, then styled it by editing the CSS. It is not identical to what is illustrated in the demo template, but I think achieving that would be more difficult.

Let me know if anybody has a better solution!
