the main nav only shows content on the home page. any other page just shows 404 error

In Global configuration, you have chosen to use apache mod_rewrite, but it might be disable in your apache, that caused the issue, switching mod_rewrite to No solves it.

I have turned off sef urls and that seems to make the site work. Before switching it back on please rename your htaccess.txt file to .htaccess then enable mod_rewrite ans se friendly urls and see if that works.
