We translated an article from Croatian to English.

    http://www.mmacube.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=438:cro-cop-clears-things-up&catid=34:mma&Itemid=102

We cited the original source of our translation in the article. Now the
problem has come up where we found a website using our exact translation
    on their website.

They never cited us for the translation and they just slapped our quotes
from the interview translation onto their website.

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/ufc/2486497/Cro-Cop-hits-back-at-White.html

Everything we translated matches up on their website word for word. You
can see the mmacube.com translation is the original one. Is what they done
legal or illegal? I mean our translation is a HUMAN translation not a
    machine one.

Anything we can do about this?

I mean it’s total bull somebody can just work their ass off translating a story only to have it stolen by those ****ing scum bags at the sun.co.uk…..they won’t even reply to my e-mails. I asked for them to please cite me, but no replies at all.

scum bags all of them….sad part is they are a huge website…big as hell.

    Report them to the BBC!
Get them in the media spotlight!!!
Newspapers hate it when they are exposed as thieves/liars so report them to another major site and they’ll be investigated.
There may also be a site that’ll help to deal with this – I can’t remember the name of the site that deals with plagiarism. You might also want to contact the newspaper regulators (cant remember that either!!!)

Assuming you can prove it’s your work!

Contact Customer Services and tell them the entire article is stolen. The journalist will get suspended.

lol hanifahmed, you’re obviously not too familiar with the The Sun newspaper.

<blockquote>Newspapers hate it when they are exposed as thieves/liars so report them to another major site</blockquote>Not this one! Infact they thrive on it. I’d say they’re in court almost every day for libel and it costs them MILLIONS every year. Do they care? NO. It’s not called a ‘rag’ for nothing.

Here’s a whole website dedicated to The Sun and it’s ‘lies’.

@yamemaru: You do not really have any legal claim to the text. You say it’s an accurate translation of what the guy said and they’ll just say they translated it themselves.

And it’s not the first time this particualar ‘journalist’ has stolen an interview either… http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2007/09/07/do-these-dana-white-quotes-look-familiar/

    It’s illegal. Totally.

Unfortunately, plagiarism is rife on the internet and we have to deal with people stealing our original work most days.

However, with this organisation you would have had to have acted within minutes with a telephone call from a copyright lawyer to their team of lawyers (believe me, they have dozens). Also, you would have had to form a DMCA infringement (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) within minutes of their publication … more info here:

As Scotty quite rightly pointed out, this particular organisation just don’t care and it would cost you thousands and thousands in lawyers fees and, even after that, they would probably just remove the article and there’s nothing further you can do about it.

I also ran the URL of your article through Copyscape (which I often use to track any issues of people stealing my own work) and copies of your article are now all over the internet (some with links back to you, but most without stating you as the source), so there’s very little you can do about the Sun situation, as they could now claim they took it from elsewhere, not from you.

Try putting your URL in here:

    Cheers
    Chris

    wow…thesun.co.uk is pathetic.

It is disgusting how any large company can get away with copyright infringment just because they have the lawyers and the money. Questbg’s idea of copyscape is at least one measure so that you know who’s copying your work and maybe they could suggest other methods of protection.

Unfortunately The Sun is a very well known British ‘newspaper’ but because of this you could turn it around. You could just make the most of the publicity by posting as many places as you can about the story, it could very well bring more visitors to your site… look how many pop stars make money out of controversial publicity!

good luck man. As another posted said if you take them to court you may be wasting both your time and your money because im sure they’ve been through a situation like this before. Plus it’s the sun they thrive on publicity after all.
