In my Ja Mitius Joomla 3.1 install I have encountered a puzzling new issue. It may relate to the configuration.php file but I am not certain.
Anyway, when I change a control panel setting it sometimes reverts.
The specific problem recently was with enabling user registration.
I set it to yes, and later I come back to the site and the setting has reverted to no.
Also recently the template went into development mode without me touching anything. I switched development mode off and the site returned to normal, so no harm done. But it is a hassle and a mystery.
FYI I did a QuickStart installation, and that may be part of the problem. The installation may not have overrwritten all files which were already present in the public.html folder.
I assumed that they would, but that assumption may have been fale.
Any thoughts from Joomlart or fellow boarders are appreciated.

I always set up a dev site on the server first and install there. That way I don’t have to overwrite any files, I can get it how I want before transferring over to the production site and I keep the dev site for testing off upgrades, changes, etc BEFORE they go into production.

Just having a dev site means you retain all your hair, it doesn’t go grey and if it goes ti%%-up you don’t have a mad fight and the hassle to find a fix. 😉

You could try doing the same i.e. set up a domain prefix i.e. dev.mydomain.com, make a new database (v. important) for the dev site and then drop the quickstart in there. See if you have the same problem. If not, you know its down to old files somewhere, or permissions etc so work the dev site, and then bring it across to production.

    Hope that helps!

    Hey swissa,
I’m all in with this. It’s exactly what we did. We always build out on a developmental domain, get it working and then move it all over to the livesite domain. In this case, we didn’t notice the bug until weeks later. The problem appears to be that saved settings stay put for awhile. I don’t know the interval. But I went to bed last night with registration enabled. When I got up this morning registration was set to “no.” So I am still scratching my head. We are looking at configuration.php.

Well, now I have a rough estimate of how long settings last. It’s about three hours. Enable Registration has now reverted to “no.” I reset it to yes first thing this morning. Baffling.

Sorry if that can across as being a bit smug etc. I’ve seen (i.e. done it myself) it a few times where the domain wasn’t clean before transferring over and it ballsed the site up. I just cleared it all down and retransferred the site using Akeeba – obviously changing the database from dev to prod, killing all old data in prod first.

In configuration.php ensure that the paths for the temp and log directories are set right. You may want to clean out cache and check your permissions too.

    Viel Glück!

    Hey swissa,
No worries, thanks for taking an interest. The domain probably wasn’t totally clean and it was my bad. But we’ll get to the bottom of it.
